Types of air conditioning units you'll find in our listings

Air conditioner is a broad category, and the right unit depends entirely on what you're cooling. Here's what regularly moves through our auctions:

  • Window AC units: Self-contained units that mount in a window or wall sleeve. Typical capacities range from 5,000 to 24,000 BTU. Common in site offices, guard shacks, and small rental properties.
  • Portable spot coolers: Wheeled units from brands like MovinCool, Port-A-Cool, and OceanAire. Used for server rooms, event cooling, and emergency AC replacement when a building system fails.
  • Packaged rooftop units (RTUs): Carrier, Trane, Lennox, and York commercial RTUs ranging from 3 tons to 25+ tons. Standard equipment for retail buildings, warehouses, and light industrial.
  • Split systems: Separate condenser and air handler. You'll see residential 1.5–5 ton systems and larger commercial mini-splits from Mitsubishi, Daikin, and LG.
  • Industrial chillers and air-cooled units: Large tonnage equipment for process cooling, manufacturing, and data centres.

Why buy a used air conditioner at auction

New commercial HVAC equipment has long lead times and steep price tags — a 10-ton rooftop unit can run $15,000+ before installation. Buying used through Ritchie Bros. typically cuts that cost significantly, and you can take delivery in days instead of months. Much of the inventory comes from building renovations, business closures, fleet upgrades, and over-stocked HVAC contractors, meaning units often have plenty of life left. For property managers handling multiple AC replacements, or contractors keeping spares on hand, auction sourcing makes the math work.

Top air conditioner brands to look for

Carrier

One of the most recognised names in HVAC. Carrier's WeatherMaker rooftop series and Infinity split systems are widely deployed in commercial buildings, and parts availability is excellent across North America.

Trane

Trane Voyager and Precedent RTUs are workhorses you'll often see come through our listings. Known for durability — many units run 15–20 years with proper maintenance.

York and Lennox

Both manufacturers produce a full range of commercial and residential equipment. York Sunline rooftop units and Lennox Strategos and Energence series show up frequently.

Mitsubishi and Daikin

If you're after ductless mini-split or VRF systems, these are the brands to watch. Strong efficiency ratings and reliable inverter compressors.

MovinCool and Port-A-Cool

The go-to brands for portable and spot cooling. MovinCool Office Pro and Classic Plus units regularly appear in our portable cooling lots.

What to look for when buying a used air conditioner

  • Compressor condition: The compressor is the most expensive component to replace. Check for excessive amperage draw, listen for hard-starting or grinding noises, and review any inspection notes on hours of operation. A failed compressor can cost more than the unit itself.
  • Refrigerant type: Older units running R-22 are increasingly expensive to service since the refrigerant has been phased out. Look for R-410A or R-32 systems for long-term serviceability. Confirm refrigerant type before bidding.
  • Coil condition: Inspect both evaporator and condenser coils for corrosion, bent fins, and refrigerant leaks. Coastal or industrial environments can corrode coils faster than the rest of the unit.
  • Age and SEER/EER rating: Pre-2015 commercial units typically have lower efficiency ratings. A higher SEER on a newer used unit may pay back the premium in utility savings within a few seasons.
  • Electrical specs: Confirm voltage (115V, 208/230V, 460V three-phase) matches your installation. Commercial RTUs are usually three-phase — verify before purchase.
  • Controls and economiser: On commercial RTUs, check that the thermostat interface, economiser dampers, and any BACnet or Modbus controls are functional. Replacement control boards can be expensive.
