When it came time to retire, selling with Ritchie Bros. was an easy choice for the Marshall brothers.

Once we got rolling, we never looked back.

Rick and Rod Marshall have been working in the oilfield industry since their teens, starting as laborers for their uncle's company, Howard Marshall Construction Ltd., which specialized in road building, as well as pipeline and lease construction. The brothers were soon equipment operators, then foremen, and then supervisors with the company before they decided to venture out on their own.

In 1994 the brothers started up RM Oilfield Construction Ltd., based in Stettler, Alberta. Much like their uncle's company, they continued doing pipeline and lease construction, as well as working on wellsite facilities and reclamation work.

"Once we got rolling, we never looked back," said Rick Marshall. "We started with one backhoe, one dozer and one pipelayer, and built up to an entire fleet of equipment, buying most of it through Ritchie Bros. auctions."

For us, it's always Ritchie Bros.

The Marshall brothers attended basically every Ritchie Bros. auction since the inception of their company—growing in tandem.

"Ritchie Bros. has been very important to our business—they've been a part of our lives for more than 20 years," said Rick. "When we started attending the auctions there was no online bidding, prices were controlled by the local market, now people can bid on equipment around the world—it truly is a global operation."

In 2017, after 23 years of working jobs across Alberta, Rick and Rod decided it was time to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Now they needed to sell their more than 270 equipment items and trucks.

"Ritchie Bros. is a Cadillac operation—very organized and thorough, excellent advertising and great customer service—when we decided to sell all our assets we never looked at anybody else," said Rick. "For us, it's always Ritchie Bros."

The items were sold at Ritchie Bros. Edmonton auction site in April 2017.

"It was an excellent experience, the Ritchie Bros. team catered to us the whole time," said Rick. "This was a major step in our lives. Previously we had only sold three or four items in a single auction. We were very happy with the results—prices were even better than we expected!"
