Truck tractors, prime movers, semi-trailer trucks, tractor trailers, big rigs, 18-wheelers, articulate lorries or artics - whatever you call them, you can find all kinds of transport trucks at Ritchie Bros. In fact, we help thousands of people sell and buy transport trucks, trailers and other transportation equipment each year. Check out these five facts for some insight into the number and types of transport trucks people buy and sell at Ritchie Bros. unreserved auctions.
#1 Ritchie Bros. sells a lot of trucks. A lot.
People around the world know our auctions as the best place to buy and sell heavy machinery. But we sell more than yellow iron. We sold more than 287,000 items in 2012, and a lot of it was transportation equipment, including 22,364 trucks.
You can always find thousands of trucks in our current inventory, including single, tandem and tri-axle transport trucks from all the major manufacturers. We also sell a wide variety of vocational trucks, even pickup trucks and Walmart fleet trucks!
# 2 T/A truck tractors top the list
Based on dollar value, we sold more hydraulic excavators than any other category of equipment in 2012, followed by crawler tractors (dozers), wheel loaders and then tandem axle (T/A) truck tractors.
In fact, we sold 7,776 tandem axle truck tractors worldwide in 2012 (representing US$182 million in sales). A lot of people literally drove away happy after the auction!
#3 Truck prices are set on auction day
Every Ritchie Bros. auction is unreserved. That means every items sells to the highest bidder on auction day. The most paid for a transport truck at our auctions so far in 2013: AU$305,000 (approx. US$316,000) for a 2012 Kenworth T909 6X4 truck tractor/prime mover (T/A) with 109,046 km on the odometer (lot #97 in our March 2013 auction in Brisbane, Australia, pictured above).

#4 We sell trucks from the top truck makers
You can find truck tractors from all the top manufacturers at Ritchie Bros. auctions. Based on number of tandem-axle truck tractors sold, the most popular brands at our auctions in 2012 were:
Freightliner (along with another popular brand, Western Star) is owned by Germany's Daimler AG, the world's biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles.1 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks are manufactured by USA-based PACCAR.2 International Truck is the flagship brand of Navistar, also based in the USA, and Mack is owned by Sweden's Volvo Group, the world's second largest heavy truck manufacturer.3
#5 We sell trucks for big and small companies
Anyone can buy transport trucks at our auctions, and anyone can sell. Some of our customers are owner-operators that sell just one or two trucks at a time; other customers own large fleets, for example Walmart, and sometimes sell dozens - even hundreds - of trucks at a time.
In 2008, we sold an entire fleet of trucks and trailers for brothers Denis and Louis Larabie, of Ontario, Canada. Said Louis afterwards: "Making the decision to use Ritchie Bros. was easy. They offered good terms, they could handle all the equipment, and they could sell it all in one day. We could close our books and move on."
