About the Area
There is a lot to see and do in the Cranberry Portage area, whether you just want to kick back and relax, or participate in some of the best recreation the Canadian wilderness has to offer, Lake Athapapuskow has it all.
- The Village of Cranberry Portage is a modern community with great educational opportunities, accommodations, friendly and helpful businesses and many great outdoor opportunities for all enthusiasts. Other large centres near the Pas to the south, and Flin Flon to the north, are only a short drive away, providing access to national retailers, airports, medical services and other amenities. Cranberry Portage is the gateway to the Grass River Provincial Park.
- Location. Cranberry Portage is approximately 700 km northwest of Winnipeg on Hwy 10. The Pas is 100 km to the south and Flin Flon is 50 km north. Air service is available daily from the Pas and Flin Flon airports. Bus service is offered daily from Winnipeg to Cranberry Portage.
- Big fish! Access some of the best freshwater fishing in northern Manitoba on Lake Athapapuskow. Huge lakers (trout), walleye, northerns, burbot and perch are all found here. - Nature lover’s paradise. The surrounding boreal forest is home to animals such as moose, black bear, wolves as well as bald eagles and loons. The lake spans over 100 square miles with vast stretches of water and hundreds of islands and bays. It is ideal for fishing, sailing, skiing, boating and swimming. In the summer, sunlight shines up to 20 hours per day. In the winter, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing, skating, ice hockey and curling are among some of the activities to partake in.
- Getting there. Fly into Flin Flon Airport (only 15 minutes away), take Via Rail train service to the Pas (only one hour away) or drive on paved highways.
